As we began telling them all that we knew, the distant
sun began to set and our audience slowly changed into an indistinct
crowd of shadows. As many of them lit up cigarettes
(a few turned to drink) it seemed to us as if we were talking
to a group of flickering red fireflies. Since we could no longer
read the expressions on their darkened, shadowy faces, we
had no way of knowing what effect our words were having
upon them other than to notice that the flickering red points
of cigarette-light held between their fingers moved up and
down through the thickening evening darkness in ever increasing
speed. Whether out of curiosity or irritation, we had no way of knowing.
