Death to the Unusual Ones!” shouted the grumpy, knowit- all senior citizens whenever we approached them in their old age establishments.

Once again, those loud grown-ups started talking amongst
themselves, ignoring us wandering orphans and the lessons
of history the old man had taught them. Our vanished holy
land, the fallen Germans, the vanished Europeans, the Ice Age
– they had learned nothing.
“So. That’s how these proud Germans came to their end.”
“And what about us?”
“Wha’d’ya mean?”
“How did we end up this way? Weren’t we once the
proud people of this greatest of great cities?”
“Are you sayin’ that we’re to blame for these ruins all
around us?”
“Why are we even wasting time talking about the dead
echoes of a cold yesterday? What’s done is done. Let’s go
gather some books and start a fire.”
“Yeah”, grunted another who turned away. “I don’t
wanna listen to anymore history.”
“We don’t wanna listen anymore… No more history… No
history…” grunted, grumbled, mumbled one after another as
they turned and walked away from us; a shadowy crowd of
vanishing figures swallowed up by the unlighted ruins and
gloomy darkness of a vast, urban landscape once known by
the name of Paris.
