Modern Turkey Continuity And Change PDF

by Ahmet Evin, Modern Turkey Continuity And Change Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Modern Turkey Continuity And Change books, Presented in this volume are essays and surveys examining elements of continuity within the context of the broad changes that have marked the history of modern Turkey. The establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923 represented a fresh start after the demise of the Ottoman Empire that had spanned the medieval and the modern times, but had become too outdated to cope with the complexities of the industrialized world. Although the Republic was meant to shed the burden of the past in order to meet the challenges of the contemporary era as a modern nation-state, it nevertheless inherited a great deal from the rich civilization of the Ottoman period. Over the last sixty years modern Turkey has been standing up to the challenges of the increasingly demanding and fast changing world of the twentieth century. The fact that it has been able to do so is in no small measure due to its adherence to the principles of evolution and development to keep pace with contemporary civilization. And it is the adherence to these principles that have provided a continuity along with flexibility in social, economic, political, legal, administrative and diplomatie spheres, which are discussed by the contributors to this volume.

India PDF

by John Harriss, India Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download India books, India has been catapulted to the centre of world attention. Its rapidly growing economy, new geo-political confidence, and global cultural influence have ensured that people across the world recognise India as one of the main sites of social dynamism in the early twenty-first century. In this book, research leaders John Harriss, Craig Jeffrey and Trent Brown explore in depth the economic, social, and political changes occurring in India today, and their implications for the people of India and the world. Each of the book’s fourteen chapters seeks to answer a key question: Is India’s democracy under threat? Can India’s Growth be sustained? How are youth changing India? Drawing on a wealth of scholarly and popular material as well as their own experience researching the country during this period of major transformation, the authors draw the reader into key debates about economic growth, poverty, environmental justice, the character of Indian democracy, rights and social movements, gender, caste, education, and foreign policy. India, they conclude, has undergone some extraordinary and positive changes since the early 1990s but deeply worrying threats remain: increasing authoritarianism, growing inequality, entrenched poverty, and environmental vulnerability. How India responds to these crucial challenges will shape the world’s largest democracy for years to come.

Modernisation Of Chinese Culture PDF

by Jana S. Rošker, Modernisation Of Chinese Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Modernisation Of Chinese Culture books, The editors are grateful to the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for its generous support of their research work which enabled them to publish the present book. The present book carefully maps the Chinese modernisation discourse, highlighting its relationship to other, similar discourses, and situating it within historical and theoretical contexts. In contrast to the majority of recent discussions of a “Chinese development model” that tend to focus more on institutional then cultural factors, and are more narrowly concerned with economic matters than overall social development, the book offers several important focal points for many presently overlooked issues and dilemmas. The multifaceted perspectives contained in this anthology are not limited to economic, social, and ecological issues, but also include political and social functions of ideologies and cultural conditioned values, representing the axial epistemological grounds of modern Chinese society. 2011 was the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. The centennial is relevant not only in terms of state ideology, but also plays a significant role within academic research into Chinese society and culture. This historic turning point likewise represents the symbolic and concrete linkages and tensions between tradition and modernity, progress and conservatism, traditional values and the demands for adjustment to contemporary societies. The book shows that Chinese transition from tradition to modernity cannot be understood in a framework of a unified general model of society, but rather through a more complex insight into the interrelations among elements of physical environment, social structure, philosophy, history, and culture.
