Methods In Prosody PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Ingo Feldhausen, Methods In Prosody Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Methods In Prosody books, This book presents a collection of pioneering papers reflecting current methods in prosody research with a focus on Romance languages. The rapid expansion of the field of prosody research in the last decades has given rise to a proliferation of methods that has left little room for the critical assessment of these methods. The aim of this volume is to bridge this gap by embracing original contributions, in which experts in the field assess, reflect, and discuss different methods of data gathering and analysis. The book might thus be of interest to scholars and established researchers as well as to students and young academics who wish to explore the topic of prosody, an expanding and promising area of study.

Gecco German English Contrasts In Cohesion PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Kerstin Kunz, Gecco German English Contrasts In Cohesion Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Gecco German English Contrasts In Cohesion books, In contrastive linguistics English-German, there is a tradition of accounting for contrasts with respect to grammar, and to a lesser extent, for lexis and phonetics. Moving on to discourse and text, there is a sizeable body of literature on cohesive patterns in English and German respectively - but very little in terms of a comparison. The latter, though, would be of particular interest for language learners, translators and, of course, linguists. The proposed book attempts to close this gap, based on a number of years of corpus-based study into variation and cohesion in the two languages. While there is an overall focus on the language contrast, we shall for each of the two languages also investigate variation between several different registers language-internally, and between written and spoken mode in particular. For each of the five major types of cohesion (co-reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctive relations and lexical cohesion), overviews will be given of contrasts in the system and of contrastive frequencies in instantiated text. The book should thus be relevant for language teaching, translation and generally corpus-based work on English and German, in terms of results and methodology.

The Oxford Handbook Of Voice Studies PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Nina Eidsheim, The Oxford Handbook Of Voice Studies Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Oxford Handbook Of Voice Studies books, More than 200 years after the first speaking machine, we are accustomed to voices that speak from any- and everywhere. We interact daily with voices that emit from house alarm systems, cars, telephones, and digital assistants, such as Alexa and Google Home. However, vocal events still have the capacity to raise age-old questions about the human, the animal, the machine, and the spiritual-or in non-metaphysical terms-questions about identity and authenticity. In The Oxford Handbook of Voice Studies, contributors look to the metaphorical voice as well as the clinical understanding of the vocal apparatus to answer the seemingly innocuous question: What is voice? From a range of disciplines including the humanities, biology, culture, and technology studies, contributors draw on the unique methodologies and values each has at hand to address the uses, meanings, practices, theories, methods, and sounds of the voice. Together, they assess the ways that discipline-specific, ontological, and epistemological assumptions of voice need to shift in order to take the findings of other fields into account. This Handbook thus enables a lively discussion as multifaceted and complex as the voice itself has proven to be.

Voice Attractiveness PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Benjamin Weiss, Voice Attractiveness Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Voice Attractiveness books, This book addresses various aspects of acoustic–phonetic analysis, including voice quality and fundamental frequency, and the effects of speech fluency and non-native accents, by examining read speech, public speech, and conversations. Voice is a sexually dimorphic trait that can convey important biological and social information about the speaker, and empirical findings suggest that voice characteristics and preferences play an important role in both intra- and intersexual selection, such as competition and mating, and social evaluation. Discussing evaluation criteria like physical attractiveness, pleasantness, likability, and even persuasiveness and charisma, the book bridges the gap between social and biological views on voice attractiveness. It presents conceptual, methodological and empirical work applying methods such as passive listening tests, psychoacoustic rating experiments, and crowd-sourced and interactive scenarios and highlights the diversity not only of the methods used when studying voice attractiveness, but also of the domains investigated, such as politicians’ speech, experimental speed dating, speech synthesis, vocal pathology, and voice preferences in human interactions as well as in human–computer and human–robot interactions. By doing so, it identifies widespread and complementary approaches and establishes common ground for further research.

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Assimakis Tseronis, Multimodal Argumentation And Rhetoric In Media Genres Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Multimodal Argumentation And Rhetoric In Media Genres books, This collection advances the study of context-dependent characteristics of argumentative discourse by examining a variety of media genres in which text and image (and other semiotic modes) combine to create meaning. The chapters have been written by an international group of senior and junior scholars researching multimodal argumentation in the last two decades. In each chapter, a specific approach to argumentation and rhetoric is combined with insights from visual studies, metaphor theory, scientific visualization, cognitive science, semiotics, conversation analysis, or (documentary) film theory in order to explain how multimodal genres function argumentatively and rhetorically. Together the chapters present a state-of-the-art in the analysis of multimodal argumentation in such diverse genres as print advertisements, news photographs, scientific illustrations, political cartoons, documentaries, film trailers, political TV advertisements, public debates, and political speeches. The volume will be of interest to advanced students and scholars in argumentation studies, rhetoric, and multimodal communication.

The Notion Of Syllable Across History Theories And Analysis PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Domenico Russo, The Notion Of Syllable Across History Theories And Analysis Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Notion Of Syllable Across History Theories And Analysis books, Any notion linguistically expressed, even one such as the syllable, is always the result of several different viewpoints. In order to take this into account, this book draws inspiration from the scheme of quaternion, as conceived by Sir William Rowan Hamilton and later introduced in theoretical linguistics by Ferdinand de Saussure. The first term of the quaternion (The Dawn of the Syllable) is provided by historical observations. The second term (Beyond the Sound of Syllables) is composed of different descriptive analyses of the syllable carried out in some particular languages and dialects. The third term (The Body of Syllables) presents the analytical-instrumental analysis of the syllable, while the fourth (De Syllaba Ventura) proposes some theoretical considerations.

Beyond Language Boundaries PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Marta Fernández-Villanueva, Beyond Language Boundaries Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Beyond Language Boundaries books, The way speakers in multilingual contexts develop own varieties in their interactions sheds light on code switching and multimodal dynamic co-constructions of grammar in use. This volume explores the intersection of multimodality and language use of multilingual speakers. Firstly, theoretical frames are discussed and empirical studies involving Catalan, German and Spanish as L1, L2 or FL are presented interconnecting verbal and gestural modalities into grammar description or exploring actions as sources for gestures, which may nonverbally represent the argument in German dynamic motion verbs. Other chapters focus on positionings in interviews, lexical access searches or proxemics in greetings and farewells. The contributions secondly focus on verbal features of language use in multilingual contexts related to self-representation and co-construction of identity through code-switching, deixis or argumentative reasoning in different communicative events based on multilingual data of languages including Croatian, English, Italian, Brazilian-Portuguese and Polish. The findings call for a reviewed conception of grammar description with implications also for the conceptualization of deixis, for L2/foreign language acquisition and language teaching policies.

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Iris Berent, Language By Mouth And By Hand Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Language By Mouth And By Hand books, While most natural languages rely on speech, humans can spontaneously generate comparable linguistic systems that utilize manual gestures. This collection of papers examines the interaction between natural language and its phonetic vessels—human speech or manual gestures. We seek to identify what linguistic aspects are invariant across signed and spoken languages, and determine how the choice of the phonetic vessel shapes language structure, its processing and its neural implementation. We welcome rigorous empirical studies from a wide variety of perspectives, ranging from behavioral studies to brain analyses, diverse ages (from infants to adults), and multiple languages—both conventional and emerging home signs and sign languages.

Verbale Aggression PDF

Proceedings Of The Viith Gscp International Conference Speech And Corpora by Silvia Bonacchi, Verbale Aggression Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.
